Language Development Tips for Parents (Part 2 of 2)

Welcome back to part 2 of our focus on language development tips for parents. How many of the tips did you practise this week?

Following on from tip 5 with you reading together, providing a language rich environment for your child is essential to their reading journey.

Let’s continue!

Start to point out words in the environment, on foodstuff and other household labels so that the connection can be made between spoken and written language. Do this in the environment also with stop signs, print on shops and buildings.

Label items around the house with post-it notes that highlight what the object is. Some children will learn to read relatively easily and will start to build visual maps in their mind of the word and will recognise it ongoingly. However all children learn differently and so this will not be the case for all.

Music is a wonderful way for children to develop language as it is an easier way for them to learn new words and sounds, through the rhythm and repetition. Some children learn well with rhymes also and so singing songs works similarly.

Use actions, where you pair a word with an action, inviting your child to imitate the action as a means of understanding what the word means.

Children learn at their own pace and no two children will be the same. Do give your child time to learn and explore language
